the great cleanout of '09

It started simply with one closet. Then the tree fell on the house, and we had to vacate two closets. Given that we have no attic or basement, this was a huge blow- and meant that stuff was EVERYWHERE in the house. Which has sparked the great cleanout of '09. I've actually gotten rid of enough things that I will only be able to fill one of the closets whenever we can move the stuff back in. And though I don't have an 'entertaining closet'...a dream of mine...I do now have some 'entertaining shelves', shown above. My son has even gotten into the organizing mood and helped with my filing.

whole foods

Okay. I admit it. I shop at Whole Foods. I know the Whole World thinks they are ridiculously priced, but as I've grown increasingly pro-organic, I've ended up doing the majority of my grocery shopping there and justify my purchases this way: their organic food is actually cheaper then Kroger's (a price check of a fresh basil bunch showed $6.99 at Kroger, $4.99 at WF)...so is their Earth's Best baby food (double the price at Kroger)...and they have all-natural beef, poultry and pork- whereas, our local Kroger just carries the all-natural beef.

And besides the benefits of occasionally shopping with Ashley Judd and Tipper Gore and getting a fresh fruit smoothie at the fruit stand (my son adores the 'Sunset'), Whole Foods now offers a newsletter that tells you how to save money at the store, called the Whole Deal. You can download it here. My husband picked it up the other day and declared that it was 'actually a good read.' This is a man that usually reads Brad Thor novels and Sports Illustrated in his spare time, so take that for what it is worth.

One interesting tidbit I learned was that they sell spices separately in bulk, which I thought was genius. You don't have to buy a whole thing of 'anise' if your recipe calls for it...they sell it by the teaspoon! When I went back to verify this was true, I was told they are sold in the Whole Foods Body store (right across the way)- which I found a tad inconvenient, but nonetheless, it would save me storage space and money.

oooh...purl

I love Purl Soho's blog, and really just about anything and everything they do (such a pretty logo, too...Brooke!). So it was no surprise when I came across these cookie beauties on the Purl Bee. Yes, yes...I know- they were intended as holiday gifts- and I promised no more Christmas, but I think this is one of those ideas that could be easily translated to any time of year. They give a great tutorial for packaging them...and for a fabric hound like me, I'm loving this super easy idea.

entertaining journal

I used to keep an entertaining journal that documented each party we had at our house, or sometimes just a record of food that I made for someone else's party. The middle three images are from a 'dog days of summer' birthday party I threw for my two labs (really just a good excuse to have people over), as well as a friend. I still refer to that binder- I would put recipes of things I made as well as 'reviews' of them, invitations that were sent out, etcetera. I'd like to think I will do the binder again- but I think it's a long shot with how full life feels these days. The only two resolutions I've come up with this year are: 1) don't use a paper or plastic bag all year and 2) start back with pilates 1-2 times a week. I've got many, many more to make- but I'm starting with those for now!
