decisions, decisions

I'm trying to decide what holiday card to use this year, and am having a tough time making a decision. Above are my current contenders... bird wreath, brown chevron, and deer antlers-red(I think the white one would be really cute, too!). I'm going to have to take a look back at my photos and see which will match up best.

And speaking of photo cards...I just saw that Whitney is running an amazing promotion! Submit your holiday photos with a chance to win 50 free photo cards if they use one of yours for a sample card. I love freebies...

1 party down, 2 to go...

Last night was fun. A dinner for 10 women, all of whom I enjoy being around. I tried to time things so that I actually got to spend some time with my guests. Everything I fixed required different timing (basil and goat cheese chicken, haricots verts, roasted potatoes, rice), however, so while I did get to chat some- I spent more time in the kitchen then I would have liked. The potatoes took wayyyy longer then they were supposed to, but it all turned out fine in the end. We ate like Europeans and dined at 9, but no one seemed to have a problem with it. The top two photos are the only ones I managed...of the drinks set-up, and some of the apps (ricotta and goat cheese spread with sun-dried tomato salsa).

Right now I'm in the midst of setting up for our playgroup. We'll be celebrating November birthdays. My friend is bringing the cupcakes, and I'm in charge of drinks and snacks. I've included a couple of snapshots I've taken while trying to figure out the setup. This is good practice for my son's birthday at the end of the month. I got some big red balloons blown up at Party City this morning, and filled little party cups with baby snacks (mini vanilla wafers, goldfish, cheerios). I also saw my chance to use a favorite vintage dish of mine-- the children's silhouette bowl, above. I've filled it with graham crackers.

Tonight I've got another dinner with some great ladies- my 'book' club, though we seemed to have dropped the book-reading part, and simply focus on drinking wine. Our carbon monoxide detector is currently going off and won't stop (though there's definitely no carbon monoxide in the house), so I'm off to deal with that!

j.crew party

I love this account of a private party, held for the highest J. Crew card-charging clients in Manhattan. Excerpt: "the all-male catering staff wore white button-down shirts with jeans and tennis shoes. They were also wearing the same ties (seen above), in a red and navy combination."

And on a personal note, I've got three events at our house in the next two days, so I might have to make myself scarce until next week! Thank goodness for Ina Garten, many of her recipes are getting me through the festivities...

man party

A Party reader recently wrote in and asked for ideas on what to do for her man's birthday. This is always a difficult one, since most often a guy doesn't want too much attention for his birthday, but might silently be offended if it isn't properly recognized.

A couple of years ago I threw a bash for my husband's 30th. I've been searching old files to see if I could find the ephemera I created for the party, but alas, found none. Then today while looking for something in my closet, I stumbled upon a quiz I created for the event, which I entitled, 'Test Your Charlie IQ'. It was a fun way for his friends to find out how well they really knew him. I kept the questions from being too cheesy or embarrassing. Sample: 'What is Charlie's favorite reality tv show?' Answer: So You Think You Can Dance. The winner won a fifth of nice vodka. There was a tie with two of his guy friends, so we had a bonus round of questions. This was a fun game that everyone got into. I think I was off in the timing, however...I waited too late in the evening and then it was a bit of party stopper. I would recommend doing it in the beginning.

I used a cut-out of Charlie's head from a 3rd grade school picture as the 'theme' that was carried out everywhere (see it vaguely in the upper left hand corner of the quiz?). Charlie's head dangled from paper lanterns, adorned the buffet (I got it catered by a cheap Carribean food place), and was tucked in various areas of the house (such as under the toilet seat). I kept the color palette to bright blues, greens and of course, white. I never had anyone sing him happy birthday- I just had the ice cream cake that he adores. For him, singing would have been too much. I would deem it a success...he was ultimately happy because he got to celebrate the day with friends.

baby shower gifts

Before I had my little one, I had no idea what to get someone who was expecting. The easiest, and probably most appreciated, is something off their registry. You may prefer, however, to get something that is pretty (and practical), and not necessarily something they registered for. Here are a couple of my favorites:

1) an unexpected children's book: Not a Box, is a favorite of ours
2) anything from Plan Toys: these primarily wood toys are non-toxic and made to last
3) bla bla dolls: my son's all-time fav...he has deemed the bla bla puppy his 'lovey'
4) Haba Toys...very similar to Plan Toys, they have a great selection of brightly colored things to choose from
5) Sophie! She's a cute, squeaky baby chew toy from France that looks like a dog toy, but a must for teething babies.

Other favorites are: Swaddle Designs swaddling blankets, wipe warmers (a nice treat for baby tush on a cold night), Trumpette socks and Makie clothing.

And while we're talking baby gifts, I must confess that some of the things I SWORE I would never have in my house, are things that I cannot live without...like a swing or an exersaucer. I ultimately decided that I'd rather invest in prettier storage options and have the necessary but uglies around for the moments when I need two seconds to take a shower!
